Summer Surfboards (a.k.a. Grovelers) are built for the smaller and weaker waves you'll tend to find during the summer months. Typically fuller framed, with wider, flatter outlines, a summer surfboard will generate speed with ease, allowing you to get out there and have a ball in waves you might pass up if armed only with a typical shortboard. Although the optimum wave type would be weaker waves in the region of knee to chest high, most summer boards will incorporate enough high-performance characteristics to allow them to be surfed in decent waves without too many dramas. And for those living in areas where waves rarely get big, and windswell is the norm (English Channel coasts or The Med, for instance) a Summer Groveler will be more 'go-to board' than 'step-down'. And something worth noting: Foam is your friend in small waves, whether catching them or riding them; so it's a good idea to add a litre or two of volume with your summer board - to help you glide over flat spots and get into weak waves.
