If you surf a lot in cold water there's a very good chance you'll develop Surfer's Ear at some point. Unless you wear ear-plugs! Otherwise known as Bony Exostosis, Surfer's Ear is a bony growth that forms in the ear canal as part of the body's natural defence mechanism. Essentially your body is trying to protect you from the elements by shutting up shop. Exacerbated by wind, the condition will eventually lead to permanent discomfort, tinnitus and an increased susceptibility to infections. A thoroughly unpleasant drilling procedure might need to be carried out, requiring several weeks' out the water - and no surfer wants that!
