Attaching a surfboard leash is an easy but important step every surfer needs to know. Your leash keeps your board close by, so you don’t have to worry about it floating away after a wipe-out. Whether you're new to surfing or a seasoned rider, getting it right is simple once you know how. In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to attach your surfboard leash so you can get out on the water and ride with confidence. Let's dive in!
STEP 1
Begin by ensuring the pre-tied knot of the leash string is at the back of your surfboard. Next, thread the bottom end of the leash string underneath the metal bar in the leash plug, pulling it out through the other side.
Attaching a surfboard leash loop is straightforward but doing it correctly is essential for safety. We have included the image above to assist in attaching your leash loop correctly and we recommend following the image closely for optimal results.
STEP 2
Once the leash string has gone under the metal bar in the surfboard plug, continue feeding it through until both sides are at equal lengths. Then, grab hold of your rail saver. See the image below for reference.
STEP 3
After adjusting the knot, grab your rail saver. Unfasten all the Velcro and slide it through the loop between the leash knot and the surfboard plug. The knot should fit into the crease between the Velcro pads. See image below for reference.

STEP 4

Place the surfboard leash string knot into the crease of the rail saver, then begin folding the velcro, ensuring the leash string is neatly enclosed inside. Once that’s done, you’ve successfully attached your leash to your surfboard!
STEP 5

Do a final check to ensure everything is securely fastened, and there are no tangles or loose ends. Double-check the leash plug on your surfboard and the ankle cuff. We also recommend checking out this How to Video if you are still struggling to attach your leash.

What is the point of a surfboard leash?

A surfboard leash is a surf safety accessory that keeps you attached to your board after a wipe-out, preventing it from drifting away. It ensures you can easily get back to your board and protects other surfers from runaway boards and the chance of collision. We highly recommend wearing a surf leash at all times to ensure you are always feeling confident and getting the most out of your sash.
