The Boss Up is the bigger brother of the S Boss. This utility midlength is the most well-rounded and versatile shape in the Slater Designs range, crafted to cruise across weak wave faces and grind through cavernous overhead tubes. The Boss Up is the board you would travel with if you could only bring one board with you. Your one board quiver with maximum performance in a purely versatile package.

Kelly’s Take
Wave Type
This is the most utility board in the Slater Designs range, it works in everything. I enjoy it in smaller surf when I just want to cruise, but from what I’ve heard, it holds in the barrel as well as anything.
Fin Setup
The Boss Up is basically the S Boss with bigger dimensions and a lengthened rail line which create drive, so you want more pivot in your fin set. The KS1 is just an all around good template, and works perfectly to balance out the longer rail line of the Boss Up. I like it set up as a Quad.
Volume
Both Shane Dorian and I have been riding the 6’8”. Michel has been riding the 6’10”. For me, 40.8L on the 6’8” is 13 more liters of volume than my shortboard. The thing is, I wouldn’t care if I was on a 6’6”, 6’8” or 7’0” - you don’t have to have the perfect volume on a shape like the Boss Up, it’s versatile across sizes.
Dan Mann’s Take
Wave Type
The most fun I’ve had on the Boss Up is medium sized, punchy surf with an open face - perfect for carving. I’ve had a lot of fun in smaller weak surf, but the way the board links turns in head high waves is something I cannot stop thinking about.
Fin Setup
Quad always. The KS1 is an all around template that was designed to suit a wide variety of conditions. The template has a lot of pivot for a neutral template, and when combined with the long rail line on the Boss Up, you want fins that can pivot immediately like the KS1. If you start with your favorite fin set and it feels too stiff, add more pivot with the KS1 template.
Volume
I love the rail line on the 6’8” and 7’0”, but the Boss Up is one of those shapes that doesn’t command you dial-in your volume perfectly. Any single surfer can ride the Boss Up in a variety of sizes. I’ve been riding the 6’8” the most, which has 40.8L, which is 7 more liters of volume than my normal shortboard.
Kevin Schulz’s Take
Wave Type
This is one of those boards that I like to take out when it’s small and gutless, if I just want to catch waves. But it would work well at a big point break like Pavones or Rincon, even a big day at Sunset. The Boss Up is versatile - it’s got performance for sure, but it works for cruising as well.
Fin Setup
The beauty of the Boss Up is it has a 5 fin setup. You can ride it really loose as a twin fin with a small trailer, but I mostly ride the KS1 Quad in Large.
Volume
I ride the 6’8” at almost 3” thick and 40.1L, which is 13 liters more than I ride in my everyday S Boss. The increased volume means paddle power is incredible, but doesn’t compromise performance
