The stormy season has barely begun and we have already been hit by one of the fiercest storms in recent memory, we think this winter is going to be a wild one.
Many of us have found out the hard way that our favourite short and wide shortboard that always gets us through the summer months really struggles when the waves pack real power. When the waves get big the boards get bigger, longer, and more refined. Serious waves require serious boards so here’s our top picks of the winter boards on the rack at the minute… it’s the Step Up, Round Up!
Pyzel Ghost & Ghost Pro
First, we've got the Ghost and Ghost Pro from John Pyzel. These are tried and tested staples in the Pyzel range. Many customers rely on the Ghost and Ghost Pro as their go-to winter travel boards, making them a solid option for heavier waves this winter.
Channel Islands Black Beauty
Another tried and tested classic, the CI Black Beauty, is a timeless design. You've probably seen the classic footage of Tom Curren surfing these boards at J-Bay. It's also a favourite among our customers for Indo trips and handling heavier waves here in the UK.
DHD Sweet Spot 4.0
Next up, we've got the Sweet Spot 4.0, the latest step-up from Darren Handley. The Sweet Spot range has been a favourite among customers and staff here at DTL for years. These solid, well-made boards are perfect for tackling heavy waves both abroad and on the UK shores this winter.
JS Schooner
The JS Schooner has been a massive hit in the last few months. We've received amazing feedback from customers, especially those taking these boards to tropical destinations and enjoying them in more powerful surf. Two of our team riders, Reubyn Ash and Tom Lowe, have also been using them here at home, making the Schooner a regular sight at Porthleven and other hollow, heavy waves around in the UK.
Pukas x Christenson Water Lion
The Water Lion, a collaboration between Chris Christenson and Pukas, was originally designed for waves like Mundaka and Hossegor. It features a slightly chunkier nose but still maintains a well-refined tail and plenty of rocker. This is a reliable board that will have you covered for anything you want to tackle this winter.

Jim Banks Hit the Road
Remember what we said about serious wave’s requiring serious boards? The Jim Banks Hit the Road is the board you grab when everybody else is too scared to go out… it’s a modern classic that has been created and tested in some of the most challenging waves on the planet.
