Warriors of Winter

This year’s competition has been all time. An amazing run of swell, tonnes of great entries and none other than Kelly Slater to judge the winner! With a tough year and a lot of cancelled travel plans it’s been refreshing to see people scoring lots of epic waves at home. Over in Hawaii, Kelly has been busy judging all of our finalists and has picked the winner of our Warriors of Winter ’20/21 competition.

Congratulations to photographer James Bowden for the insane shot and surfer Jack Johns for being crowned the Warrior of Winter for the second year running! The story behind James’ photograph really sets the scene and describes the reality of a harsh Cornish winter and the lengths taken to get the shot. With so many outstanding entries, we knew it would have been a tough choice for Kelly, but for him this photo really captured what winter is about – “With one or two friends and getting crazy barrels”.

After a crazy winter of waves, we are already looking forward to next winter’s comp and more epic entries from around the UK and Ireland. We have our fingers crossed the waves will be just as good and hopefully we will get some decent swell throughout the summer until then.

Here are some of our personal favourites from our Warriors of Winter ’20/21 competition:

Surfer Seb Smart by photographer Nigel Aird.

Surfer Jake Sage by photographer Ben Battell.

Surfer Woody New by photographer Will Frost.

Mark Boyd captured by Tom Horig.
