When it comes to explosive surfing, few do it like Down the Line team rider Reubyn Ash. Known for his progressive style, lightning-fast turns and gravity-defying airs, Reubyn has spent years pushing the limits. Reubyn has dialled in his equipment to match his aggressive yet fluid approach. In this blog, we take a closer look at Reubyn’s go-to JS surfboards—the blades he trusts when the waves start pumping and the performance stakes are high.
Whether it's charging hollow barrels in the tropics or punting big airs in summer slop, these are the boards that keep him on point.
JS Surfboards
JS Industries was founded in 1999 by world-renowned board shaper and JS owner Jason Stevenson and built up from a combination of Jason’s surfing passion and decades of shaping expertise. JS Industries has won the Surfboard of the Year award 8 times in the last decade, without a doubt a very popular brand amongst the surfing community.
The boards are known for their innovative design, durable construction, and world-class performance. Many models are available in Hyfi construction: JS’s cutting-edge epoxy technology that enhances strength, flex, and responsiveness, now sold globally and loved by both pros and everyday surfers.
JS boards are ridden by a loaded world-class team from Jeremy Flores, Kanoa Igarashi, Sierra Kerr, Julian Wilson, Miguel Pupo, Mikey Wright and our very own local air-busting, free surfer Reubyn Ash. We recently had Reubyn pop down the shop and grab some fresh whips for summer, and he gave us a short breakdown of his everyday go-tos. Let's dive in!
JS Xero Gravity
"My everyday shredding stick for frontside waves" - Reubyn Ash
Out of the JS Daily Series - The JS Xero Gravity is the ultimate everyday performance shortboard, blending drive, control and flow in one sleek shape and is the number one board recommended by the team as your daily weapon. Designed as the next step up from the popular Xero Fusion model, it features a refined rocker, balanced outline, and a reliable squash tail, making it ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers looking to push their performance in everyday UK conditions. Fast down the line with plenty of drive off the bottom, the Xero Gravity thrives in waist-to-overhead-high surf and is one of Reubyn Ash’s go-to boards for frontside shredding.
JS Raging Bull
"Raging Bull is my go-to for fun backside sessions." - Reubyn
Another one out of the JS Daily Series and an extremely versatile board, the JS Raging Bull is a powerhouse, designed for surfers who want confidence, control, and paddle power when the waves turn on. Designed in collaboration with Occy, it has extra volume through the nose and a flatter entry rocker. It paddles fast and gets in early. A pulled-in tail and exit rocker curve give control and manoeuvrability, while the moderate single-to-double concave helps you sort out your lines with smooth transitions.
With Occy's signature "JS Raging Bull thickness," this board delivers paddle power, flow through flat sections, and the ability to hold a rail with ease. It’s Reubyn Ash’s go-to board for backside waves when conditions are pumping, making it a must-have for those chasing bigger, better surf.
JS Xero Fusion
"For smaller days, I’ve added the Xero Fusion – a great step-down board that still performs like a high-performance shortboard" - Reubyn Ash
The JS Xero Fusion is a user-friendly board built for flatter, smaller waves. Sitting between the all-rounder Xero Gravity and the groveller Sub Xero, it’s a go-to for 1–3ft surf. Featuring the Blak Box rocker, it has those classic modern rails, a narrower swallow tail, and smart foam distribution—volume where you need it, sensitivity where it counts. The flat rocker construction gives instant speed through weak sections, while a single-to-double concave adds lift and control in the pocket.
Fast, responsive, and easy to ride, the Xero Fusion is the new favourite for JS team riders chasing performance in everyday surf. Perfect for UK conditions, the Xero Gravity is fast down the line and holds power through turns, making it a regular in Reubyn’s quiver.
JS Golden Child
"When the waves are really on, I’ll be reaching for my Golden Child" - Reubyn
This one's out of the Performer Series - the JS Golden Child earned legend status after Parko won the 2009 Quiksilver Pro final on it, right after creasing his Forget Me Not in the semis. He went on to take out Bells and J-Bay on the same board, never losing a heat when riding it.
Now revived with modern updates to the deck and rails, it features a flatter vee deck for sensitivity, a narrower nose and tail for control, and reduced concave for extra hold. Ridden 1–2 inches longer than your everyday shortboard, the Golden Child is built for powerful rail surfing and smooth precision in quality waves and is Reubyn Ash's go-to board for cooking waves.
JS Big Baron
"On the flat days when I'm just cruising and having a laugh, I've gone for a big baron." - Reubyn Ash
The JS Surfboards Big Baron is a modern take on classic mid-lengths ridden on the Gold Coast points—fast, flowing, and built for stylish rail work. It features a flat rocker for speed, vee to double concave for smooth transitions, and a pulled-in round tail for added control.
With low rails and generous volume, it paddles easily and turns with surprising agility. Best in playful conditions from knee to overhead, the Big Baron thrives on points, reefs, and stretched-out beachies. It’s designed to smooth out your surfing, offering glide, flow, and the kind of relaxed control that translates effortlessly to shorter performance boards.
Team rider Reubyn Ash loves the Big Baron for its effortless speed, drawn-out turns, and how it helps him tap into a more creative, relaxed style between airs and barrels. It’s the perfect board for surfers who want to slow it down without sacrificing performance.
